Talks & recordings.

Eight surviving video records currently gathered here, on computational taste, machine learning and art, and the design of a life. Each surviving file appears in full, including one segment that is all that remains of a longer MoMA talk. The selected stage record that follows is drawn from CVs, calendars, event programs, and audience notes—not merely from whichever videos were already in one folder.

The Synesthetic Cookbook

plenary · TASTE³: Wine·Food·Art · Napa

“Any idea, any emotion, color, sound can suggest food.” The talk follows that claim through two distinct systems: the Synesthetic Cookbook, which recommends existing dishes through sensory associations and programmable family “tastebuds”; and Gulp Fiction, which learns ingredient cliques and cuisine essences from 160,000 recipes, then composes from words.

The recording runs 18:22 and has been restored from the original tape.

Words caught in the room.

Some talks survive only in the notes people carried out. These lines were quoted live and preserved in my Twitter archive.

“The point of personalization is relevance. Time is important. Why waste time on unimportant things?”

audience note · Personalize Without Being Creepy · SXSW 2011

“Taste is a game because many times, you’re trying to impress people.”

audience note · Big Taste Data · KAUST · January 23, 2012

“AI is a romantic moving target—we’ll call it AI as long as we can’t understand how it works.”
